Canine DNA Collection Procedure

Our canine DNA sample collection kit will include collection instructions, buccal (cheek) swabs, and a return envelope. Use one kit (4 swabs) per dog. It is very important that all 4 swabs returned are from the same dog. If you would like to submit another dog's sample, you will need another kit.

To prevent cross contamination, do not allow other dogs to interfere while you are collecting from the intended dog. If you plan to collect more than one dog, wash your hands between dogs to prevent any cross-contamination.

Below are the step-by-step collection instructions. You can also download printable instructions (You will need Acrobat Reader to open this file).

  1. Please fill out the information on the small envelope and on the order form (if you did not order online).
  1. Open the plastic package and remove a swab. Grasp the plastic handle and pull the swab out; avoid touching the soft end of the swab.
  1. Hold the dog’s head firmly against your body with one hand. With the other hand, place the swab into dog’s mouth against the inside surface of the cheek.
  1. Firmly rotate the swab against inside of the dog’s cheek for about 10 seconds. Swab needs only to be damp, do not attempt to collect extra saliva; the objective is to collect loose CHEEK cells.
  1. Immediately insert the swab in the small white envelope with the dog’s information printed on it.
  1. Repeat the process for the next three swabs - Ideally, you should use 2 swabs on the left cheek and 2 swabs on the right.
  1. Seal the envelope.
  1. Please return with forms in the addressed envelope provided.
